Social Media contain information which can contribute to situation . This information can concern the incident itself, its impact, or the needs of the population affected by the .

When trying to take Social Media into account, Crisis Managers face a major challenge due to the high volume of information. SMAP supports this process by automating the collection process, and offering mining tools based on content analysis, time and geography.

SMAP can be used to detect incident related information published by private persons, directly exposed to or directly witnessing the and providing, on purpose, or not, information which could be useful to the crisis manager to successfully manage the crisis.

In this case, SMAP can work with pre-registrered or pre-identified volunteers (which Twitter accounts would be known in advance), as well as with spontaneous volunteers.

When the occurs, SMAP can detect starting rumours, propagating false information about for example the nature, the origin or the management of the crisis. SMAP can help detecting, understanding the content of the rumour and the community within the Twitter where it is initiated and/or spreading.
