Forest fires: Technological Tools

Endorsed by
Motivation

The increase in extent and intensity of wildfires creates more challenges for managing fire risk and firefighting. Technological tools can play a key role through enhancing the information flow and supporting the decision support systems used by fire commanders to take adequate emergency decisions (evacuation or confinement) and coordinate the action of first responders.

Potential Solutions
Following solutions could be addressing this gap.

The increase in extent and intensity of wildfires creates more challenges for managing fire risk and firefighting. In many situations inadequate decision-making in the management and containment of wildfires results from the lack or inaccuracy of information and the increasing difficulties in coordination the emergency response. Technological tools can play a key role through enhancing the information flow and supporting the decision support systems used by fire commanders to take adequate emergency decisions (evacuation or confinement) and coordinate the action of first responders.

Rationale & related CM function(s)

Improve predictions of wildfire propagation and real-time risk analysis by considering the variability of wind speed and direction, humidity and fuel moisture influencing weather forecasts
Improve accuracy in fire detection systems (early-warning) and usability of the tools by crisis managers by using multispectral images with multiple time series
Demonstrate the applicability and multiple benefits of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
