Health Check allows travelers to report on their symptoms through automated calls with an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. Health agencies can then periodically and automatically monitor the symptoms and wellbeing of at-risk individuals.

The Check and Report Ebola (CARE) Hotline, a novel approach to monitoring, was designed to allow travelers to report their health status daily to an interactive voice recognition system (IVR). After a rapid and agile development strategy, the IVR solution was piloted with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) federal employees who returned from deployments to countries with Ebola outbreaks.

Identifying, tracing, and following up with contacts of potential / confirmed cases during an outbreak is a critical need. Monitoring of potentially at-risk contacts is performed by healthcare workers via paper forms or basic digital forms like ODK, which delays analysis and requires time to process, analyze and develop reports. These manual follow-up and processing tasks lead to less effective teams of healthcare workers during an outbreak, and acts like a tax during the critical period of initial investigation and response. HealthCheck is helping the Ugandan Ministry of Health to tackle this issue.
